The Venetian Macau Tennis Showdown 2009

Our Samprasfanz moderator, Philip recounts his unforgettable weekend in Macau. He, along with our President, Joy Parker and her daughter Robyn, and longtime member Lily, was in Macau for the “Tennis Showdown” – an exhibition match featuring Pete Sampras against Andre Agassi and also introducing upcoming tennis players Yuki Bhambri and Ryan Harrison. October 24, 2009, Macau On Saturday, October 24th, we took the ferry from Hong Kong to Macau and got to the Venetian hotel around noon. After lunch we went to the mini-golf course on the 7th floor of the hotel, for the photo shoot on a purpose-built tennis court on the artificial grass. Pete and the other players arrived on schedule. He look great, a little tanned, and looked very fit indeed, more so than when I saw … Read entire article »

A Tribute to Our Champion by Sandie Anthony (USA)

Written with heart-felt thanks for the years of nail biting, breathtaking, floor pacing, cover my eyes because I can’t bear to watch, jubilant, tearful, beaming with pride memories to the greatest tennis player of all time……….Pete Sampras. Thanks for the memories Pete! Isn’t it funny how things happen, isn’t it funny how things go, Isn’t it funny they never appreciated you until you no longer showed? Isn’t it funny they didn’t acknowledge your serve and volley game, Isn’t it funny now they’re saying without you the sport is not the same? Isn’t it funny how they’re lining up to shout your accolades and praise, Where were they for the past 12 years during your glory days? Isn’t it funny they labeled you boring, and refused to acknowledge your feats, Isn’t it funny how they almost wallowed in your … Read entire article »

The Best of Pete by Csilla Kiss

Over the years, Pete Sampras has played many memorable matches. Here are “The Best of the Best” as compiled by our Samprasfanz member, Csilla Kiss. (Originally posted on the messageboard in December, 2002) Highest Drama 1) ’96 USO QF vs. Corretja 2) ’95 AO QF vs. Courier: these 2 are total no-brainers 3) ’96 RG QF vs. Courier: what is this about QFs? Like I often said, my favourite period in 1996: he was the cutest then. This was just another example of pouring all that emotion & heart into a tennis match (“He’s got a big heart & will leave it on the court”- Courier) It’s not fair he didn’t win Roland Garros that year. 4) ’00 Wimbledon 2nd rd vs. Kucera: compared to the top 3, relatively muted drama, but considering the circumstances … Read entire article »

Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number by Georgia Christoforou (UK)

Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number by Georgia Christoforou (UK)

When Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi contested the 2002 US Open Final their combined ages amounted to 63! Long before the tournament began, the critics and journalists had been writing about the possible impending retirement of two of the greats in the game. Some of the headlines regarding record breaking Pete Sampras were nothing short of soul breaking. For example one US Newspaper ran an article with the headline “For Pete’s Sake Stop” but had any of … Read entire article »
