Sampras Inducted into Rogers Cup Hall of Fame
August 10, 2013
Pete Sampras was inducted into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame on Saturday night, joining tennis icons like Billie Jean King, Monica Seles, John McEnroe, Martina Hingis, and many other luminaries in the prestigious Hall of Fame.
Sampras reached the Canadian final in 1995, semifinals in 1990, and two other quarter-finals. The only player to finish as year-end world No. 1 for six consecutive seasons (1993-1998), he is also second all-time in number of Grand Slams won after hoisting seven Wimbledon trophies, two Australian Opens, and five US Opens. Sampras exited the ranks of professional tennis at the top of his game, winning his very last match in the 2002 US Open final against Andre Agassi.
Sampras was honoured in a Centre Court ceremony follow the semifinal between Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska. A video showing his achievements was shown on the video board and Sampras spoke a few words about the induction.
Sampras, alongside 2007 Rogers Cup Hall of Fame inductee John McEnroe, was also on-site at Rexall Centre to participate in Rogers Legends Cup. The two popular stars showed off their still-impressive skills in an exhibition match following the induction ceremony, which McEnroe captured 6-4, 3-6, [10-8] – in a match that also saw Toronto native and member of the Montreal Canadiens hockey club PK Subban act as chair umpire.

Pete as a Tennis Commentator?
During the presscon at the Rogers Cup Legends Tour in Toronto, Pete was asked if he has any plans to be a tennis commentator.
Sampras: Not really. Theseguys do a great job. I enjoy being home. Traveling is not something I really want to do. So I think John and Jim are pretty much set in stone at the majors, and I enjoy listening to them. They do a really good job and I’m not sure if that’s something I want to do.
Courier: He just likes sitting at home and listening to the best.
Sampras: There’s so many commentators, you know, it’s incredible.
Sampras: My taste…I like listening to the guys that have actually played rather than sort of report on the extra stuff. You know, these two guys next to me are pretty solid.
