Petition for a Pete Sampras Statue

To All Pete Sampras Fans,

Pete Sampras, winner of 14 Grand Slams is a tennis legend who needs to be remembered not only by his tennis fans worldwide, but by all who attend the U.S. Open and all who see the Grand Slam on television. For this reason, we believe that a statue of Pete at the U.S. Open would be a wonderful way of giving recognition to his great tennis.

Please sign our petition to send to the USTA asking them to erect a statue of Pete at the U.S. Open in New York in recognition of his many years of great tennis.

I am a huge fan of Pete. He is the only one who sent the shivers to me every time he stepped on the courts: it was a decade of pure joy and emotions.
Tennis has a name and it is Pete Sampras!

My mother was never interested in tennis but in 1995 she had to spend several weeks in hospital. My father and I were both working abroad and she felt very lonely. Flicking idly through the tv channels one day she noticed a young man who reminded her of me. It was during Wimbledon and the young man was Pete Sampras. She watched him play and was so impressed by his quiet dignity and athletic grace. Following him at Wimbledon gave her something to look forward to each day and she feels he helped her to get well. Since joining Samprasfanz she has got to know many others who feel similarly about Pete, because his decency and incredible determination have helped them through a difficult time in their life. Someone who inspires these lasting feelings in others is a special person. For this reason, for being a perfect role model - oh yes, and for being the greatest tennis player ever! - I think there should be a statue of Pete Sampras at the home of American tennis.

I watched Pete play tennis for many years, as my Mom gave anyone in the household little choice. I also traveled with my Mom to see Pete play twice. The last time I traveled with her was when Pete won the US Open and then retired. My mom was crying and soooooo happy for him and his wife. She still follows everything Pete does and always shares this with me. Not really a sports fan of any type, but by watching Pete so often, it didn't take me long to figure out he was one of a kind. "The Best of the Best" as Mom would say. I think it's only fitting for the USTA to honor the best American to ever play the game by erecting a statue in his honor. Even I could understand that he was truly "one of a kind".

The great should be recognized for their talent, and moreso if they do not go to boast of it themselves. Sampras is one of the few players out there who purely pursues tennis, and thereby naturally giving back with the most stunning games as a tribute to human ability.

Others who have other concerns have already spent the energy to preserve an image. Let us help Sampras preserve his after all the effort he has put into his art.
