Sampras' first win on clay

May 20, 2001

At the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany Pete Sampras marked his first win on clay against Argentina's Franco Squillari 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1).

Sampras started slow, lost his serve in the opening game and eventually lost the set. In the 2nd and 3rd set, Pete fought back and stayed patient against Squillari, a semi-finalist in last year's French Open.

"I was a little impatient at the beginning but then I managed to play more quietly. This win was very important, I've regained my confidence. It's a great feeling to have won again." " said Pete.

"I haven't played much all year and it didn't go that well in Rome and Hamburg. It's really important for me to play well here," Pete added. "I have never really been lucky in Paris. I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself by saying it but maybe I'll make it this year."

The World Team Cup is the final tune up event leading to the second grand slam of the year, the French Open.

Joining Pete in the USA team are Jan Michael Gambill and Andy Roddick.
