Pete Ready for Action in Adelaide

December 29, 2001

Pete Sampras and Todd Martin will face each other in round one of the AAPT Championships tennis starting in Adelaide on Monday. Of the Australians, late wild card entrant, Scott Draper, will come up against Brazilian Andre Sa, with Wayne Arthurs to meet Frenchman Jerome Golmard.

Another wild car entrant, Mark Philippoussis, is set to clash with Frenchman Julien Boutter, and Andrew Ilie's opponent is yet to be decided in qualifying rounds this weekend. Tournament number one seed, Tim Henman, from Britain, will also find out his opponent once qualifying finishes on Monday.

American Todd Martin was today looking forward to returning to the court and wasn't phased about his round one opponent, and tournament number two seed, Pete Sampras.

"I beat Pete the last time I played him, and it was in Melbourne last year, so I have some positive memories to draw upon for this week's match," he said.
"I have a one match winning streak (against Sampras). That's after losing 17 out of 19 matches before, so I'm on number three and looking for number four.

"I've played two matches since early September, so it will be really interesting for me to get back onto the court and that's why I'm here. If I win against him that's great, if I win against somebody who can't play then that's fine too."
