Sampras out of Italian Open

May 4, 2000

PONTE VEDRA, Florida - It was bad luck for the United States at last month’s Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic, when Pete Sampras sustained a thigh injury. Putting this disappointment behind him, Sampras had hoped to continue his warm-up campaign en route to another try for the French Open – the only Grand Slam title which has so far eluded him – by playing the Italian Open next week. However, speaking by telephone from his home in Florida, Sampras revealed that he won’t be fit in time for this event.

“My quad is still giving me some problems and is not 100 per cent. Although I’m able to practice, Rome is just going to be too early for me to play again.”

His goal now is to be fit for the Masters Series event in Hamburg on 15th May. All being well, this will be followed by the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf – his last tune-up tournament before Roland Garros starts on May 29th.
