sampras Pulls Out of Swiss Tournament, Ends 2001 Season

October 20, 2001

The German Press agency DPA reported that Pete has decided not to accept the wild card to the Swiss Indoor tournament. "Pete told us that we can give the wild card to another player. The season is over for him," announced Juerg Vogel, the tournament's media consultant.

Pete will also be skipping the Tennis Masters in Paris. Thus, he will not qualify for the season ending Tennis Masters Cup in Sydney, Australia. This will be the first time in 12 years that Pete will not be playing in this event.

In his quarterfinal loss to Max Miryni at Stuttgart, Pete complained of a sore arm. "When you can't serve, it definitely takes a little bit out of my game," he said.

Pete will close the 2001 season without winning a title.
