Sampras snubs Queen's

June 5, 2002

Pete Sampras has decided not to play in next week's Stella Artois Championships at Queen's Club.

The seven-times Wimbledon champion has accepted a wild-card for the tournament for the past five years, and was again expected to begin his grass-court campaign in London.

But after his poor start to the season, Sampras has decided on trying to gain confidence by playing in the Gerry Weber Open on grass in Germany.

"Whatever personal demons Pete is fighting at the moment, I suspect that, more than anything else, he feels he needs a couple of wins under his belt," said Ian Wight, tournament director of the Stella Artois.

"I guess he feels those are more likely at Halle than at the Stella Artois."

Sampras was recently knocked out in the first round of the French Open

Lleyton Hewitt heads the line-up for this year's Queen's tournament in west London, taking place from 10-16 June.
